When you commission the building of your website, the biggest focus for you and quite often your designer is the design. We all want our sites to look great with great graphics, but quite often the trade off comes with functionality.

Your website should be a working tool for your business, it should be a 24/7 sales man, bringing you business so that every time you check your emails you have new leads waiting to be converted into sales.

The job of a website can vary. You can use it to capture prospects contact details so that you can contact them at a later date to sell to them, you can use it to generate leads for you to contact with a quote, or you can use it to sell direct to the public automatically. This is where many web designers falter as it is not strictly their job to get visitors to your site, so many of them dont concern themselves with how to do it, but there are some functionalities that will seriously hinder your progress when trying to rank well in search engines. Features such as flash animations and the use of content management systems (CMS) pose this problem.

The best way to ensure your site will be search engine friendly is to consult a professional SEO company before you entrust the design of your site to anyone. Having an SEO expert working with (or even as) your web designer will be massively beneficial in the run as if the web designer is left to do it on his own, then the chances are that the site will not be all that search engine friendly, and whats the point in having a flashy looking website if nobody will ever find it?
